A Decade of Family Fun at Bunnings

Bunnings Puppet Show - Easter Family Night - Children's Entertainment - Brisbane - Queensland

When most people think of Bunnings Warehouse, they think of timber, tools, plants, paint and, of course, the famous sausage sizzle.

For us, Bunnings has also become a place of laughter, community, family fun and puppet shows.

Over the past decade, Larrikin Puppets has been fortunate enough to perform at family nights, school holiday events and community celebrations at Bunnings stores across Queensland and northern New South Wales. Looking back, it has been quite a journey.

Technically, our first ever Bunnings booking wasn’t a puppet show at all.

On Wednesday 12 August 2015, I was booked to perform roving puppetry at Bunnings Manly West between 10am and 1pm. Back then we were experimenting with different styles of performance and were happy to give almost anything a go.

Looking back, it feels like a glimpse of what was to come.

These days, we rarely offer roving puppetry. Our characters work best when families have seen them perform on stage first and have had the chance to get to know them. A puppet show gives audiences context and helps create that connection.

At the time, though, we had no idea that Bunnings events would become a regular part of our performing calendar for more than ten years.

Our first full puppet show at a Bunnings store came the following year.

On Thursday 17 March 2016, we travelled from our home in Moorooka to Bunnings Warwick for their Easter Family Night.

At the time, Warwick felt like quite an adventure. We set off from Brisbane in the late afternoon and headed south-west towards the Southern Downs. One of my strongest memories from that day is the sunset. As we approached Warwick, the sky was glowing with colour and it felt like the perfect backdrop for the evening ahead.

We arrived a couple of hours before the show to load all the equipment in and set up.

The stage was unlike anything we had performed on before.

The loading dock at the back of the store became our theatre stage.

Our puppet stage sat on the loading dock while the audience sat below on rows of chairs looking up at the performance. It was such an unusual setup, but it worked really well.

The show began at 6:45pm.

At that point, we had never really heard of children’s entertainment being presented at a hardware store. It seemed like a quirky idea, but once we saw the families arriving and the atmosphere building, it all made sense.

After the show, we packed everything down and made the drive back to Brisbane that same night.

We were tired, but we had discovered something special.

Later that year, life took us in a different direction.

In 2016, Elissa and I spent three months living in New York City, receiving formal training from puppeteers who worked on Sesame Street and The Muppets. It was an incredible opportunity that helped shape us as performers.

When we returned to Australia, we made another big change. We moved to Bribie Island.

Our next Bunnings booking came on Thursday 15 December 2016 at Bunnings Morayfield for a school holiday Family Fun Day.

Compared with Warwick, this was practically around the corner.

The 10am puppet show introduced us to what would become one of our favourite Bunnings stores to perform at.

Only a few months later, on Thursday 6 April 2017, we returned to Bunnings Morayfield for Easter Family Night.

Bunnings Puppet Show - Family Entertainment - Brisbane - Queensland

The thing we remember most about Morayfield was the audience size.

Every time we performed there, the crowds were huge.

Unlike Warwick, we weren’t on a loading dock. Instead, we performed in a large open section of the warehouse, surrounded by towering shelves and stacks of timber. The space worked brilliantly for family events and always seemed to fill with excited children and families.

It was also at Morayfield that we began to appreciate just how much effort Bunnings teams put into these events.

There was often fairy floss, popcorn, market stalls, activities for children, roaming characters and sometimes even animal nurseries. The stores transformed into community events where families could spend an entire evening together.

In 2018, we headed north on a regional Queensland tour.

The first stop was Easter Family Night at Bunnings Maryborough on Thursday 22 March 2018.

At the time, I thought Easter Family Night was the main Bunnings event held throughout the year. I had no idea how many different community celebrations the stores actually hosted.

The Maryborough performance became the starting point of a tour that took us through Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Gin Gin, Rockhampton, Gracemere, Mount Morgan and Gladstone before returning home.

Then came 2020.

We had been booked to perform at Easter Family Night at Bunnings Robina on Thursday 2 April 2020.

The show never happened.

Like so many events across Australia, it was cancelled because of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

It’s a booking we’ve always been a little disappointed not to fulfil. Robina is a part of the Gold Coast where we perform regularly, and we would have loved to bring our puppet show to that community. Most of our Gold Coast bookings are private performances in schools and childcare centres, so opportunities to perform at public community events like libraries, festivals or a Bunnings Family Night are relatively rare for us.

Two years later, things finally started moving again.

On Saturday 2 July 2022, we performed at Bunnings Acacia Ridge for a school holiday Family Fun Day.

The response was fantastic.

Bunnings Puppet Show - Family Entertainment - Brisbane - Queensland

The audience was enormous, the kids were engaged from beginning to end, and the feedback from families was wonderful.

The store was so happy with the event that they invited us back almost immediately for another school holiday performance on Thursday 22 September 2022.

It was one of those occasions where everyone involved walked away smiling.

The following year brought another far away Bunnings booking.

On Sunday 12 February 2023, we performed at Bunnings Coffs Harbour South in New South Wales.

We happened to be in Coffs Harbour while training the cast of Avenue Q for the Coffs Harbour Amateur Theatre Society, and we were able to fit a Bunnings Family Fun Day performance into the trip.

There is always something exciting about performing far from home. It reminded us of that first journey to Warwick years earlier.

Then came one of the most memorable Bunnings events we’ve ever been part of.

On Thursday 9 May 2024, we performed at Mother’s Day Family Night at the newly opened Bunnings Caboolture.

Being so close to Bribie Island, it was one of our shortest drives to a Bunnings store.

There were gift stalls, families everywhere, community groups, volunteers and plenty of activity throughout the evening.

Afterwards, we saw some lovely comments online from stallholders and families who had attended. The Rotary Club of Caboolture wrote about how much they enjoyed the puppet show and how much of a great time they had at the event overall.

It was also the night that I realised Bunnings hosted far more than Easter events and school holiday activities.

There was a whole calendar of family nights happening throughout the year.

School holiday events.

Easter Family Nights.

Mother’s Day Family Nights.

Halloween Family Nights.

And more still to come.

After the success of Mothers Day, Bunnings Caboolture had us back for Halloween Family Night on Thursday 31 October 2024, right on Halloween night itself. We were in the DIY Workshop space this time, much like our set-up at Bunnings Acadia Ridge. It was a smaller area, which also included a haunted house and other spooky activities and displays for kids and families to enjoy.

On Thursday 2 January 2025, we performed a school holiday Family Fun Day at Bunnings Victoria Point.

One of the nicest things about these events is that they are free for the community.

Over the years, we’ve had friends come along with their children, including people we went to school with who are now parents themselves. It’s always nice when friends of ours come along to support the show.

It’s always nice spotting familiar faces in the audience and hearing afterwards that the kids enjoyed the show.

These events bring communities together.

Families come along for a fun day or night out. Local groups raise money through sausage sizzles. Children enjoy the activities. Parents catch up with friends. Grandparents bring grandchildren.

Everyone seems to find something to enjoy.

And yes, there is usually a Bunnings sausage sizzle somewhere nearby.

In late 2025, we returned for another Halloween Family Night, this time at Bunnings Caboolture again on Thursday 30 October. They had us back in the larger space once more for this event, where we had previously performed for their Mothers Day Family Night in 2024.

A couple of months later came a booking that had been years in the making.

An event organiser we had worked with many years earlier at the Darra Community Festival was now working with Bunnings Keperra and had been trying to secure a date for us for quite some time.

The challenge with Bunnings events is that several stores will often enquire about the same dates. When there’s a family night at one Bunnings store, it’s happening at all Bunnings stores nationally.

Once one store books the date, that’s it.

After years of trying, we finally made it to Bunnings Keperra for their Christmas Family Night on Thursday 4 December 2025.

Many Australians know Keperra as the real-life inspiration for Hammerbarn from the hit animated series Bluey.

The special Hammerbarn promotion, in which Bunnings Keperra temporarily branded itself to look like Hammerbarn from Bluey, had finished by the time we arrived, but it was still great to finally perform there and tick another Bunnings store off our list.

And the story isn’t over yet.

In 2026, we’re looking forward to performing at Bunnings Rothwell for Father’s Day Family Night on Thursday 3 September 2026.

We’ll then return to Bunnings Manly West, the very first Bunnings store I ever performed at, when we present a puppet show as part of Halloween Family Night on Thursday 29 October 2026.

More than a decade after that first roving puppetry booking, we’ll be back performing a full puppet show for local families at the very same Bunnings store where my Bunnings journey began.

When I look back on ten years of Bunnings events, what stands out isn’t the stores themselves.

It’s the people.

The children laughing at the puppet characters.

The parents sitting alongside them.

The volunteers running stalls.

The community groups raising funds.

The staff members who work hard behind the scenes to make these events happen.

We’ve performed in loading docks, warehouse spaces, timber sections, garden centres, DIY workshop areas and community event zones. We’ve travelled across South East Queensland and beyond. We’ve seen huge crowds, familiar faces and plenty of first-time audience members.

Most of all, we’ve been grateful to be part of something that brings communities together.

Thank you to every Bunnings store that has invited us to perform over the years.

We hope there are many more family nights still to come.

Larrikin Puppets On Juiced TV S11, E10

Larrikin Puppets have returned to the Queensland Children’s Hospital for another fun episode of Juiced TV! Our puppet character Troggg the blue monster first appeared on Juiced TV way back in Season 1.

After few more appearances over the years, Brett and Elissa returned to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in February 2024 to film a brand new episode about how puppets work.

Characters featured include Scrambles, Freerange the Chicken and Erse.

Juiced TV is a children’s infotainment program that benefits the health and wellbeing of sick kids and their families in hospital. Filmed at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, the show features many children from hospital as presenters and airs on the patient’s TVs. Troggg the blue monster co-hosted an episode of the show in 2015. The end of the episode featured Brett demonstrating how Troggg and some of our other puppets work. A couple of years later, Troggg featured as an interviewer on location at Juiced TV’s Paddle For Kids event at South Bank Parklands. And in 2021 Troggg and Marina appeared on a special Christmas storytime episode of the show.

Not shown on this particular episode (S11, E10) are some short “Feel Good Friday” episodes which will air over the coming weeks and months starring Troggg and Marina telling a series of funny jokes. These segments were filmed on the same day – which was Thursday 29 February, 2024.

It’s always very rewarding to visit the Queensland Children’s Hospital not only to work on cool, fun TV episodes like this, but also to bring smiles and laughter to the children who are there with illness or injury and need all the joy they can get during such a difficult time.

Five Weeks In Europe

Travelling can be lots of fun and really interesting too! Every country has their own culture, and many have different languages too. The other difference is often the weather. In December 2023 we took a break from the Summer heat and humidity of Queensland, Australia to experience a European Winter Christmas and New Year. We stayed in six different countries and 10 different cities, with day trips to even more cities! It was really interesting to reflect on a snowy Winter climate verses a hot, humid climate. Here’s Troggg checking in on us enjoying a magical snowy day in Zermatt, Switzerland.

We made a few of these videos comparing the discomfort of Summer heat, humidity and sweat with the wonder and whimsy of Winter ice and snow. It’s important to remember that those who are used to the cold climate will often crave an escape to a warm Australian beach. It’s really just what you’re used to. This is us at a school vacation care performance in the early part of the 2023 Summer Christmas holidays, followed by us just a week or two later in Zermatt, Switzerland.

Even Scrambles wanted to check in on us! He makes mention of the songs we sing at Christmas time about sleighs and snowmen and reindeer not really making much sense to us here in sunny Queensland, Australia. But over the course of our trip, even beyond our time up in the Swiss Alps (as shown in this video), we did discover horse drawn sleighs with jingling bells, and we even made some snowmen. Santa’s warm Winter coat made much more sense in Europe as well than it does in Australia.

After finally getting used to the colder climate, and enjoying being able to rug up in Winter coats and thermals, we soon made friends with a little puppet dog named Piccolo Como who joined us on our holiday. We found him at the Christmas Markets in Como, Italy and he spent the rest of our trip reporting from lots of different places around Europe. Here he is on the night we found him!

In Venice, Italy we were able to enjoy a ride in a gondola – which is the thing everyone must do in Venice. Everywhere we went we enjoyed local food and culture. Here’s Piccolo Como in Venice.

It wouldn’t be a holiday of discovery and wonder for puppeteers if we didn’t check out some puppetry stuff wherever possible. So in Ljubljana, Slovenia we went to the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre (Lutkovno gledališče), which is the premiere Slovenian theatre for puppetry. Sadly, as Piccolo Como points out, tickets for the puppet shows were long booked out many months in advance. But we at least got to see the building and then ride the funicular (just next door) up the mountain to Ljubljana Castle.

The great news is – at the top of the mountain within the castle itself was the Ljubljana Museum of Puppetry. And it was open! So we went inside and got to enjoy displays of many puppets of different styles. We even got to have a go of some marionettes. Naughty Piccolo Como went inside a shadow puppet theatre as well.

Piccolo Como sure had fun in Ljubliana, Slovenia. That’s where we celebrated Christmas in 2023. In many parts of Europe, particularly in Slovenia as we discovered, the magic of Christmas seems to last much longer than in Australia, with markets and celebrations taking place right up until the 7th of January! Even on Christmas night and the following night also – the streets were packed with families all having a great time.

We had a nice, quaint and quiet break from the bustling crowds once we got to Osijek, Croatia. A friend of ours who lives there showed us around this lovely town which is not very touristy. We visited war memorials, local restaurants and shops, enjoyed a delicious home cooked fish dinner, and also got to check out the Christmas markets. Piccolo Como came along too, of course, always “having a nice time” wherever he goes.

What a nice adventure he had as we travelled between countries. Unlike every other travel day between countries where we wrangled luggage between buses and trains, our trip from Osijek, Croatia to Budapest, Hungary was a lovely car ride.

By the time New Year’s Eve came around we were enjoying several days in Budapest, Hungary. We went on so many funiculars up mountains during our five week holiday, and this next video was filmed up another one which took us to the grounds of a massive castle. It was also fascinating to find Christmas well after Christmas Day. We found a magical Christmas market on New Year’s Eve in Budapest, which messed with our minds a bit because we were about to ring in a new year, and yet we were surrounded by carols and tinsel and lights and a lovely big tree.

It was so nice to experience falling snow in Europe on a few occasions. We found ourselves surrounded by snow covered pine trees and filled with wide eyed wonder in the Winter Wonderland of Hallstatt, Austria, as seen here with Piccolo Como.

We stayed for a few nights in Vienna, Austria where Piccolo Como is seen here enjoying the Prater Amusement Park, which is open for all to enjoy every day and night of the year, even in Winter.

Innsbruck was a very beautiful town in Austria. We both wish we could’ve spent more time there. Lovely colourful buildings (we stayed in one of those!) with looming snowy alps behind them. The town itself was filled with very old medieval buildings, some with dates from the 1300s and 1400s written on their front walls! Such beauty there, particularly the natural environment. Stop eating the snow, Piccolo Como!

We started our holiday in Milan, Italy and that’s where we ended it too. And on one of the days we went on a day trip to Saint Moritz in Switzerland for some more snow fun (including a frozen lake) and a ride on the Bernina Express red train that goes through the Swiss Alps. Here’s Piccolo Como having a nice time in Saint Moritz.

And then we wound down in Milan, Italy and psyched ourselves up for the epic 40 hour transit back to Brisbane, Australia via two Middle Eastern airport stopovers – Muscat and Doha. Here’s Piccolo Como’s last video in Europe before heading home.

Travel is very enjoyable, and videos like this are a fun way for children to learn about what other parts of the world we can discover that are different from our own. It might inspire them to think about travelling overseas someday too.

You can find even more videos of our travels – minus the puppet – on our Larrikin Puppets TikTok account – https://www.tiktok.com/@larrikinpuppets (TikTok handle is @larrikinpuppets).

A Different and Interesting Puppet Life – by Brett Hansen

Garden City Library Puppet ShowI like my life because every day is different and interesting. Last week I performed puppet shows at a library, a fish & chips restaurant and a school.

I attended four dinner/drinks gatherings, including one in a back alley American style bar and one on a union roof top.
Troggg with puppet characters Hobble and Snitch. This week I got to meet two goblins (Hobble & Snitch) and perform some puppetry on their show.
Brett with Gary Foley puppet in Richard Bell film project.

Then for a film, I puppeteered a psychiatrist in a session with acclaimed artist Richard Bell. For the same film, I also puppeteered two characters relaxing on a beach, a monster throwing darts, another monster painting on canvas, and lead a team of puppets on horses galloping into a nightclub.
Thank You For Being A Friend Puppet Show.I attended a theatre tribute show of 1980s sitcom, “The Golden Girls” (Thank You For Being a Friend) starring puppet versions of the cast.
I also performed music at the weekly improv comedy show I’ve been a part of for the last four years.

On Monday, my beautiful wife Elissa and I will be flying down to Melbourne (with Troggg) to attend the National NEIS Association Awards Gala Dinner. Larrikin Puppets is a finalist in the ‘BizCover NEIS Change Award’ category.
The reason why my business is a finalist in that particular category is because my life went through some huge changes at the time of its inception three years ago.
And whether I win the award or not, my life is better than it ever was before three years ago because every day is now different and interesting.

Top 21 Ways to be Happy

Ultimately, everyone in the world aspires to be happy, rather than depressed and miserable. Instead of letting sadness overtake their lives, these are things that happy people make a habit of doing regularly, even during times of grief and sorrow:
1. Appreciate Life
Be thankful that you woke up alive each morning. Develop a childlike sense of wonder towards life. Focus on the beauty of every living thing. Make the most of each day. Don’t take anything for granted. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
2. Choose Friends Wisely
Surround yourself with happy, positive people who share your values and goals. Friends that have the same ethics as you will encourage you to achieve your dreams. They help you to feel good about yourself. They are there to lend a helping hand when needed.
3. Be Considerate
Accept others for who they are as well as where they are in life. Respect them for who they are. Touch them with a kind and generous spirit. Help when you are able, without trying to change the other person. Try to brighten the day of everyone you come into contact with.
4. Learn Continuously
Keep up to date with the latest news regarding your career and hobbies. Try new and daring things that has sparked your interest – such as dancing, skiing, surfing or sky-diving.
5. Creative Problem Solving
Don’t wallow in self-pity. As soon as you face a challenge get busy finding a solution. Don’t let the set backs affect your mood, instead see each new obstacle you face as an opportunity to make a positive change. Learn to trust your gut instincts – it’s almost always right.
6. Do What They Love
Some statistics show that 80% of people dislike their jobs! No wonder there’s so many unhappy people running around. We spend a great deal of our life working. Choose a career that you enjoy – the extra money of a job you detest isn’t worth it. Make time to enjoy your hobbies and pursue special interests.
7. Enjoy Life
Take the time to see the beauty around you. There’s more to life than work. Take time to smell the roses, watch a sunset or sunrise with a loved one, take a walk along the seashore, hike in the woods etc. Learn to live in the present moment and cherish it. Don’t live in the past or the future.
8. Laugh
Don’t take yourself – or life to seriously. You can find humor in just about any situation. Laugh at yourself – no one’s perfect. When appropriate laugh and make light of the circumstances. (Naturally there are times that you should be serious as it would be improper to laugh.)
9. Forgive
Holding a grudge will hurt no one but you. Forgive others for your own peace of mind. When you make a mistake – own up to it – learn from it – and FORGIVE yourself.
10. Gratitude
Develop an attitude of gratitude. Count your blessings; All of them – even the things that seem trivial. Be grateful for your home, your work and most importantly your family and friends. Take the time to tell them that you are happy they are in your life.
11. Invest in Relationships
Always make sure your loved ones know you love them even in times of conflict. Nurture and grow your relationships with your family and friends by making the time to spend with them. Don’t break your promises to them. Be supportive.
12. Keep Their Word
Honesty is the best policy. Every action and decision you make should be based on honesty. Be honest with yourself and with your loved ones.
13. Meditate
Meditation gives your very active brain a rest. When it’s rested you will have more energy and function at a higher level. Types of meditation include yoga, hypnosis, relaxation tapes, affirmations, visualization or just sitting in complete silence. Find something you enjoy and make the time to practice daily.
14. Mind Their Own Business
Concentrate on creating your life the way you want it. Take care of you and your family. Don’t get overly concerned with what other people are doing or saying. Don’t get caught up with gossip or name calling. Don’t judge. Everyone has a right to live their own life the way they want to – including you.
15. Optimism
See the glass as half full. Find the positive side of any given situation. It’s there – even though it may be hard to find. Know that everything happens for a reason, even though you may never know what the reason is. Steer clear of negative thoughts. If a negative thought creeps in – replace it with a positive thought.
16. Love Unconditionally
Accept others for who they are. You don’t put limitations on your love. Even though you may not always like the actions of your loved ones – you continue to love them.
17. Persistence
Never give up. Face each new challenge with the attitude that it will bring you one step closer to your goal. You will never fail, as long as you never give up. Focus on what you want, learn the required skills, make a plan to succeed and take action. We are always happiest while pursuing something of value to us.
18. Be Proactive
Accept what can not be changed. Happy people don’t waste energy on circumstances beyond their control. Accept your limitations as a human being. Determine how you can take control by creating the outcome you desire – rather than waiting to respond.
19. Self Care
Take care of your mind, body and health. Get regular medical check ups. Eat healthy and work out. Get plenty of rest. Drink lots of water. Exercise your mind by continually energizing it with interesting and exciting challenges.
20. Self Confidence
Don’t try to be someone that you’re not. After all no one likes a phony. Determine who you are in the inside – your own personal likes and dislikes. Be confident in who you are. Do the best you can and don’t second guess yourself.
21. Take Responsibility
Happy people know and understand that they are 100% responsible for their life. They take responsibility for their moods, attitude, thoughts, feelings, actions and words. They are the first to admit when they’ve made a mistake.
Begin today by taking responsibility for your happiness. Work on developing these habits as you own. The more you incorporate the above habits into your daily lifestyle – the happier you will be.
Most of all: BE TRUE TO YOURSELF.
